MIGRAINE ON HOLIDAY
A familiar migraine may be triggered by travel stress, disrupted sleep, heat, alcohol or missed meals. Headaches can also accompany dehydration, infection, sinus symptoms, medication overuse or another medical problem.
How the pain began, whether it resembles previous attacks and which other symptoms are present help determine the safest next step.
Travellers often search for a “migraine doctor near me”, “hotel doctor for migraine” or help with a severe headache after sun exposure. These phrases describe symptoms, not a diagnosis.
Throbbing pain with nausea or sensitivity to light and sound
Headache after sun exposure, sweating, alcohol or reduced fluid intake
Head pain with fever, sore throat, sinus pressure or respiratory symptoms
Pain that feels different from previous headaches or continues to worsen
Migraine often causes moderate or severe throbbing pain, commonly on one side of the head. Nausea, vomiting and sensitivity to light or sound may occur. Some people have aura symptoms, such as temporary visual disturbance, tingling, numbness or difficulty speaking.
New neurological symptoms should not be self-diagnosed as aura, particularly when they are different from previous attacks or last longer than usual.
High temperatures, sweating, inadequate fluid intake and alcohol can contribute to headache and dehydration. Move to a cooler place, rest and take fluids in small amounts if the person is awake and able to drink. Read our dehydration and heat exhaustion guides.
A sudden, extremely painful or unusual headache, especially with neurological symptoms, collapse, seizure, fever with neck stiffness or recent head injury, needs immediate medical attention.
Colds, flu-like illness, throat infections and sinus symptoms can be accompanied by headache. Tell the team about temperature, rash, neck stiffness, coughing, facial pain, sore throat, ear symptoms and how generally unwell the person feels. See the fever doctor guide.
Seek immediate medical attention for a headache that starts suddenly and is extremely painful, or when headache occurs with new weakness or numbness, difficulty speaking or remembering, confusion, seizure, loss of consciousness, loss of vision, a very high temperature with neck stiffness, or a recent head injury.
The medical professional may ask when and how the pain began, whether it resembles previous headaches, where it is located, what medicines were taken and whether there are associated symptoms. Relevant observations and a neurological examination may be considered depending on the presentation.
Bring or photograph the packaging of anything already taken. Avoid exceeding labelled doses or combining products that contain the same active ingredient. Frequent use of pain medicines can itself contribute to recurring headaches, so tell the clinician how often you normally use them.
Send the accommodation name, room or villa details, patient’s age and the headache warning symptoms listed above. The team will review whether an available private visit is suitable and explain the appropriate care options.

Send your location, symptoms, medical history and when the headache began. The team will review whether an available hotel or villa visit is appropriate.
Migraine may cause throbbing head pain, often on one side, together with nausea, vomiting and sensitivity to light or sound. Some people experience temporary aura symptoms before or during an attack.
Hot weather, heavy sweating, inadequate fluid intake, alcohol, missed meals and disrupted sleep can contribute to headaches. A new or severe headache should not automatically be assumed to be dehydration or migraine.
Explain whether it began suddenly or gradually, where the pain is, how severe it is, whether you have had similar headaches before and whether there is vomiting, fever, neck stiffness, visual change, weakness, numbness or difficulty speaking.
Tell the medical team which medicine you normally use, what dose you have taken and when. Do not repeat doses or combine pain medicines beyond the instructions supplied with the medicine or advice from a qualified clinician.
A headache that starts suddenly and is extremely painful, or a headache with new weakness, numbness, speech difficulty, confusion, seizure, loss of consciousness, loss of vision, severe fever with neck stiffness or a recent head injury requires immediate medical attention.
